Habitat Banks for Nationwide Environmental Offsetting

We have developed two strategic habitat banks—Charmwood in Greater London and Devils Den in Kent—providing vital biodiversity units to support environmental restoration and Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach to development that aims to leave the natural environment in a measurably better state than before the development took place. Where BNG cannot be delivered on a development site, developers can look to do this off site through the purchase of biodiversity units from a registered habitat bank.

We have established two habitat banks; Charmwood in Greater London and Devils Den in Kent. Between these two sites we can offer up to 150 biodiversity units across a range of habitat types to be used to deliver a development’s BNG requirements nationwide.

Units are categorised by habitat type and the mandatory legislation incentivises the provision of units within the same LPA or Natural Character Area as the development. That said, units from anywhere in England can be used to offset a development, but more will be required where the offset is located outside of the LPA or NCA of the development site.

“We would be delighted to discuss your BNG needs, big or small, and have heads of terms and a range of contract types available should you be interested in purchasing units.”

Restoring What Was Lost

Post-war intensification reshaped the countryside, stripping away centuries-old habitats. At GK Denniss Farms, we’re committed to reversing that trend—reinstating diverse landscapes like chalk grassland and floodplain meadows to bring nature back to the heart of the estate.

A Long-Term Vision for Nature

Biodiversity Net Gain supports our ambition to create lasting environmental change. With the Trustees’ vision aligned to the Estate’s ethos, we’re investing in habitat restoration that will mature over decades—not seasons.

Farming with Balance and Purpose

Through considered land management, we’re making space for nature while continuing to produce food—honouring both our agricultural roots and our environmental responsibilities.
